Poor Tool Life?
Cause Solution
RPM too high Decrease RPM
Not enough coolant Add coolant or increase pressure
Chip load per tooth too low Increase table feedrate
Cutting edge too dull Sharpen cutting edges or replace tool
Tool Wear Change to a harder grade of carbide
Tool chipping See causes for “Chipping”
Poor Surface Finish?
Cause Solution
Not enough coolant Add coolant or increase pressure
Chip load per tooth too high Decrease feedrate
RPM too high Decrease RPM
Chipping See “Chipping” causes
Poor floor finish Add corner radius to tool
Part Dimensional Inaccuracy?
Cause Solution
End mill deflection Use stub tool
End mill deflection Minimize tool overhang
Feed to fast Reduce feedrate
Radial width too great Reduce radial width of cut
Axial depth (Z) of cut too deep Reduce axial (Z) depth of cut
Chipping?
Cause Solution
Poor fixturing Re-Fixture to increase rigidity of setup
Chatter See causes for “Chatter”
Cutting edges too sharp Use T-Process in ferrous materials
Corner of tool too sharp Add corner radius to protect corner
Incorrect carbide grade or geometry Call RobbJack for recommended tool
Chip load per tooth too high Reduce feedrate
RPM too high Reduce RPM
Chip Welding?
Cause Solution
Not enough coolant Add coolant or increase pressure
Cutting Direction Climb mill part

Chip Load per tooth too low Increase feedrate
Chatter?
Cause Solution
Chatter in Aluminum Use FM Series tool with patented Mirror Edge™ chatter reduction geometry and polished flute
Tool overhang too great Select a necked stub tool
Tool length of cut too long Use a stub tool or necked stub tool
Fixturing Re-Fixture to increase rigidity
Tool cutting edges too sharp Hone cutting edge or use T-Process tool
Feedrate too high Reduce feedrate
Depth of cut too deep Reduce depth of cut
Spindle or tool has runout Re-indicate tool in holder
